Thursday 10th November - Phnom Penh

Today has been a difficult day, but more of that later.

Monday evening I went down with a stinking cold that went straight to my chest. Tuesday I spent the day feeling sorry for myself and stayed at the hotel missing the trip to the tunnels which I was not going into anyway! Thinh our tour guide was a real tropper and took me to the chemists on Monday and tnen back on Tuesday and I ended up getting a quick ride on the back of a scooter in Saigon - bonus!

Spent most of the day on Wednesday travelling to Cambodia. The tour guide did not make a good first impression when he wasn't there when we arrived and there was no arrangement for stopping for food. Arrived in Phnom Penh and apparently it was their Independence Day from the French - well worth celebrating. There were fireworks and I celebrated by having plenty of wine for once on this trip. We are now paying for everything in US Dollars which is a bit weird.

Today was a sobering day. It started really well with a cyclo tour of the city (three wheel bikes with the two wheels at the front and some poor little man at the back pedling like mad). My driver told me he was 67! But he was great and pointed out all the landmarks including bats in a tree. Then we visited the Royal Palace. This afternoon things got serious when we visited the Choeung Ek Killing Fields where Pol Pot's regime massacared thousands of Cambodians. Scary when you think I remember it happening. This was followed by a trip to the Genocide Museum. All a bit too horific! Bumped into the Swede we played pool in Nha Trang.

Just as we were about to get off the bus the tour leader told us that apparently the Brits will be left in Siem Reap as we're not allowed into Bangkok. There was uproar! We are apparently meeting with a Manager from the Tour Company to find out what's going on, but we couldn't find anything on the Foreign Office website as to what had changed. More information when I have it.
